The soul of every sweep
Discover the heart and hands that breathe life into every Whuppity Stoorie broom. More than just tools, these are creations born from nature, tradition, and a touch of magic.

Crafted with patience and presence
Making brooms is a craft I fell in love with, a hobby that demands patience and absolute attention. The correct tension of twine when binding broomcorn cannot be interrupted, so each broom is crafted in one sitting. This act of creation brings an alignment of spirit, slowing down a busy world and offering a sensory environment filled with the scent of wood and broomcorn, the touch of tension, and the creativity of something beautiful. It's a journey into the heart of handcrafting, connecting us to nature in a world often disconnected by technology.

From Scottish woods to your home
The journey of each broom begins with foraging in our local Scottish woods, often accompanied by my dogs. I only collect fallen wood, never cutting from live trees. Sometimes, pieces bear evidence of the small creatures that once called them home, leaving beautiful natural scarring and holes. The wood is then meticulously cleaned, stripped of bark if needed, sanded, and polished. The broomcorn, either natural or coloured, is selected, and then my hands take over, allowing whimsy and imagination to guide the design of the broomhead. Hand brooms, without wood, may be all natural or coloured, imbued with knots and whispered blessings appropriate for their intended use.

Beyond just cleaning, a feeling
My hope is that when someone holds a Whuppity Stoorie broom, they feel the energy invested during its creation. Whether it brings hope for a new start, courage to change course, strength to sit with grief, or simply a smile during daily chores, the aim is for these brooms to be more than just tools. They are designed to evoke feelings in their owner, turning mundane tasks into moments of connection and joy. These brooms are functional for practical cleaning while energetically cleaning and guarding your space, all while looking beautiful.
"The wood remembers, and the besom carries."
Each type of wood carries magical properties. New beginnings with silver birch are perfect for wedding jump brooms, the strength and wisdom of oak provide grounding, or the connection with divinity and ritual work for funeral brooms is supported by the magical yew.
The heart of our craft
At Whuppity Stoorie Brooms, our handcrafted brooms stand out through their unique touches and the stories embedded within each one. We begin with broomcorn, sun-grown and imported into Scotland, which we then hand-dye or use in its natural state. The colours of twine and the broomcorn itself often guide the design, allowing each broom to evolve organically.
Spiritually crafted
Every broom is made with love for creating something spiritual and beautiful, infused with a lot of whimsy to pass on to its new owner. Our success is measured by the smiles our brooms bring.
Magical intentions
East Lothian has some of the deepest connections to Witches and the ancient magic of Scotland, especially around North Berwick and Tranent where I live.
Magic and intention are present and woven into every knot, twist, and adornment. I believe that if using the broom makes you smile, then it has achieved it's purpose.
Beyond the functional
While functional for practical cleaning, our brooms also energetically cleanse and guard your space, looking beautiful as they do so. Why settle for an ordinary broom?
Who our brooms are for
Our beautiful brooms are crafted for anyone who appreciates a touch of magic in their home and life. Whether for specific occasions, people, or simply those who cherish handmade beauty, there's a broom for everyone.
For special occasions
Our jump brooms are perfect for weddings, symbolising new beginnings and a united future. Ritual brooms are ideal for clearing altar spaces, cleaning home energies, or marking any energetic threshold, bringing spiritual significance to your special moments.
For daily magic
Beyond their ceremonial uses, our brooms are practical tools for everyday cleaning. They are designed for anyone who simply appreciates something handmade and aesthetically pleasing, adding a touch of enchantment to daily routines and home care.
Our broom varieties
I craft a diverse range of brooms, each with its distinct purpose and unique properties derived from the wood used. From hawktail and whisk brooms to turkey wings and traditional besoms, every piece tells a story.
Elder wood (the guard)
Elder wood, known as the 'Witch Tree', drives away curses, seals thresholds, and shields against malevolent forces, making it perfect for altar brooms.
Yew wood (the sentinel of time)
Yew wood anchors communication with ancestral spirits, serves as a powerful conduit for death and rebirth, and facilitates deep internal transformation.
Silver birch (the purifier)
Silver birch cleanses the space, resets energy, and ushers in a completely new start, making its energy particularly suited for wedding jump broom besoms.
Sycamore (the visionary)
Sycamore enhances intuitive clarity, clears mental blocks, fosters personal growth, and acts as a beacon for abundance and harmony in your home.
Our Broom Collections
Wild Cherry Tree
Our wild cherry broom is traditionally used in magic and folklore for matters of the heart, divination, and generating focused personal energy.
Other woods
We also craft brooms using wild cherry, hazel, oak, and more. Each wood type is chosen for its unique properties and the special energy it brings to your broom.
