Frequently asked questions

At Whuppity Stoorie Brooms, we blend traditional craftsmanship with the magic of nature. Each broom tells a story, and with proper care, it will become a cherished part of your home. We've compiled some common questions to help you get the most out of your unique broom.

What is the best way to look after your Whuppity Stoorie Broom?

To keep a broomcorn broom in peak condition and prevent the natural fibres from bending, breaking, or rotting, proper storage is key. Never stand it on its bristles, as the weight of the handle will bend the broomcorn permanently, ruining the sweeping edge. We recommend using the string loop on the handle to hang it from a wall hook. If hanging isn't an option, store it upside down with the handle on the floor and the broomcorn facing up. Avoid direct sunlight, as long-term exposure can dry out the fibres and make them brittle. When sweeping, rotate the broom, alternating which side faces forward each time to ensure even wear and prevent a permanent lean. Do not push down hard; let the tips of the bristles do the work, as pressing too hard snaps the fibres. Remember to keep it dry; broomcorn is a natural agricultural product, so do not use it to sweep wet messes, puddles, or snow. For cleaning and maintenance, comb out hair and dust using a wide-toothed comb. Wash sparingly and ensure it is completely dry.

Are there any things people should definitely not do with their broom?

To keep your broom in tip-top condition and preserve its special qualities, there are a few things you should definitely avoid. Never leave the broom soaking in water, as this can damage the natural fibres. It should not be used for cleaning muddy areas. Also, do not store it on its bristles unless you desire the swept-up, curled-looking shape on your besom bristles, which will reduce the functional sweeping ability of the broom.

Could you share some tips on how to best use your new broom?

If using your broom as an altar or spiritual tool, please know they are made with intention and blessing. However, your spiritual practice is your own, and we encourage you to regularly cleanse your broom with palo santo or selenite crystal, or another cleansing medium (do not soak in water). Some clear quartz may also complement and boost the magical energy of the wood.

How do the natural materials enhance the broom's properties?

The wooden handles foraged locally are always provided by nature, never cutting live wood. We embrace the concept of what the wood remembers; the besom carries these properties. Each type of wood carries magical properties, such as the new beginnings of silver birch, perfect for wedding jump brooms, the strength and wisdom of oak, or the connection with divinity and ritual work for funeral brooms supported by the magical yew. Our brooms are functional and may be used for practical cleaning whilst also energetically cleaning and guarding the space, and looking beautiful when they do the job.
